Week in review
October 30, 2026
We continue to anchor our work around three main thrusts: legal review, communication and an alternative offer to the YMCA.
See all newsWhite Paper
What does Morrison YMCA mean to our community and what should be considered before its future is permanently changed?
This white paper outlines the proposed sale, the community concerns that led to the formation of the Save Morrison YMCA Coalition and a proposed path toward transparent review and meaningful alternatives.
The paper acknowledges the YMCA’s financial challenges while asking whether selling Morrison is the best available response. It calls for supporting documentation, community participation and serious consideration of options that preserve Morrison’s community-serving purpose.

Morrison is where the Y's own mission is already true in practice, built over 25 years of programs, staff and partnerships.
Roughly one in five Ballantyne students faces food insecurity — these are the families least able to absorb a longer drive or a higher price.
Morrison serves over 12,000 individual users. Nearby YMCAs are already stretched for capacity and cannot absorb them.
See why Morrison matters, in our community’s own words.
Our documentary: personal stories that help explain why Morrison YMCA matters to so many people.
Watch on YouTubeCoalition members spoke before the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners, asking county leaders to help preserve Morrison for our community.
Watch on YouTubeYes. It is not simple or easy, but we believe there are legal, financial and fiduciary angles to explore. We also believe that the decision makers who approved this sale can be convinced that our community infrastructure should not be eliminated.
The sale is scheduled to close in June 2027. However, with each month that passes, the reversal complexity increases. Realistically, we have to be engaged with the Board on a tangible offer by year end.
The legal and capital work tracks are in the hands of a smaller working group. If you have specific legal or real estate finance experience, it may be helpful. Our biggest need is in the community coalition building track: lobbying politicians, communicating on social media, attending rallies and open houses, writing op-ed pieces, and helping do research and investigation. At some point there will be a means by which the community may be asked to help offset legal and research costs or raise capital for a counter-acquisition strategy. Stay tuned for more information on that.
Form support teams. Volunteer. Post on social media. Spread the word. Attend planned events. DO NOT do anything that would discredit our efforts. We are a peaceful, thoughtful, process-oriented coalition. What we want is right and just, and we believe we are on the right side of the argument.
The website, Facebook and Instagram will have a week in review update every Friday evening, with updates on Monday mornings for "the week ahead actions."

Volunteer, spread the word, or bring your organization into the coalition. This only works if enough of us show up.
